“‘I am sorry,’ I said, ‘about your men.’
With his helmet on and face obscured, I could not tell if Sharp was looking at me or not. He did not turn his head. ‘That’s the job, Lord.’”

—Hadrian Marlowe, The Sun Eater

Quentin Sharp was the Command Centurion of and a sniper in the Ninth Special Detachment attached to the 409th Centaurine Legion (codenamed the Dragonslayers) under the direct command of then-Commodore Bassander Lin. Born on Sardis, a desert world, to poor farmers, the young Quentin was conscripted at fifteen standard and dispatched to Nessus for basic training. He was assigned in time to the 409th Legion, and came to be posted aboard the ISV Tempest, which would serve as his base for the duration of his time in the wars.

Over the course of the next century and more, Quentin would serve in more than a dozen engagements, among them the Battles at Therabad, Oxiana, and Cidamus. According to medical and disciplinary reports, the name Sharp was no true surname, but a nickname and callsign, one given the man for his accomplishments as a sniper, earned by his teammates after the fighting on Aulon early in his career. In the years that followed, Quentin appears to have insinuated the moniker into official documentation, applying it as a true legal cognomen.

It was at Cidamus, after the Ninth Detachment succeeded in extracting the young Countess Irina Volsenna from her family’s bunkers, that the unit earned the nickname Dragonslayers for their defeat of Cielcin heavy artillery, during which time Quentin received the heavy burn scar on his face (which he refused to regenerate, for reasons known only to himself, and which may be only attributed to a warrior’s pride).

An accomplished sniper, Quentin favored an Aldaron LMAG Mk. 12 anti-materiel rifle, which was capable of delivering tungsten-uranium rounds to a target at a distance up to 3 miles. The weapon, while costly, was designed to put down Cielcin-Extrasolarian artillery and heavy cavalry units, and was capable of shooting targets through buildings. Quentin’s longest shot/confirmed kill was at Oxiana, where he dispatched a low-flying Cielcin shuttle at 2.7 miles distance with a single shot to the fuel tank. Per the incident report, Sharp described the shot as “pure fate,” and “divine intervention.”

Quentin Sharp died at Perfugium, along with the majority of the Ninth Special Detachment.
